To the Editor:
I am writing this in frustration over a notice letter my friend received concerning a rental increase. As of March, 1, 2011, this individual will have to pay an extra $50 per month. St. Paul Abilities Network (SPAN) rents out this building and considers it an affordable housing unit.
This person is on a fixed income and receives $1,050 monthly, of which $425 currently is paid for rent. In March, this will be $475, plus having to pay utilities which range from $60 to $100 monthly, based on the season. This leaves approximately $475 monthly for food and other living expenses.
This rental increase is approximately 12 per cent, meaning there will be 12 per cent less for other bills and living expenses. Would the administration of SPAN be willing to accept a 12 per cent increase in their rental or mortgage or a 12 per cent decrease in wages? I highly doubt it.
The administration of SPAN needs to sit down and consider the impact, this will have on such individuals.
