LETTER: Response to MD of Bonnyville councillor's motion about climate change

"Catering to a small minority never works. Facts work - not opinions."
LETTERS

Dear editor,

I am writing in response to MD of Bonnyville Councillor Crick's motion to approve Climate Stability Awareness Week, Nov. 2 to 8.

He proposes there are residents in his ward who do not believe in climate change and "felt there needs to be a response to Climate Change Activism."

In his motion he also describes the climate as relatively consistent, year-to-year.

Well Coun. Crick, the name of climate change is more accurate exactly because our world climates are no longer consistent from year-to-year or even season-to-season.

Central Europe 100-year floods happen every three years and there are observations from seniors saying they have never experienced this in their lifetime.

In Northern Europe, the temperatures are cooling as the Gulf Stream is weakening.

And how about our Canadian Arctic, which has experienced a 5C increase in average temperatures, does that sound consistent?

There are literally no climates left on this planet that are consistent - including our own here in Alberta. Seasonal rains, which are part of a consistent climate, have become generally more intense and heavier, so the daily rains sometimes produce more water in one day than what normally falls in a month.

Or ask many young new farmers who have researched the history of climate and weather to find Alberta land, which has a climate favourable to their proposed use, only to find over the last decade that historical data is no longer applicable.

The weather patterns have changed - and Mr. Crick what would you call that? Climate consistent or climate changed?

Catering to a small minority never works. Facts work - not opinions.
