OTTAWA — The federal Liberal leadership convention is underway in downtown Ottawa as party grassroots gather to select their next leader.

Voting closed this afternoon and results are expected to be announced within the next few hours.

A crowd of partisans waved candidate placards to booming music on the packed convention floor ahead of the event program beginning.

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney remains the presumed front runner and supporters greeted him with a chant of his name that rang out through the lobby.

Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Liberal MP Karina Gould and Montreal businessman Frank Baylis are all vying for the party's top job.

Speculation is swirling in Ottawa that the winner could replace Trudeau as prime minister within a matter of days and then within weeks call an early election.
