Great West Media, the source of news, advertising, and marketing with a local focus across Alberta, is seeking a full-time assistant editor and reporter. This position is based in St. Albert, where the successful candidate will work with the editor to produce engaging content for the St. Albert Gazette and for Town & Country Today. The successful candidate will start as soon as the position is filled.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce Compelling Content: Write engaging, high-quality stories for both digital and print platforms that captivate readers and draw them into the narrative.
- Breaking News Coverage: Use a digital-first approach to report breaking news promptly and accurately on online platforms, ensuring readers are informed in real time.
- Adhere to Style Standards: Maintain a sharp eye for clear, precise copy while adhering to CP style guidelines and ensuring overall editorial quality.
- Valid Driver’s License: Use a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to attend events, conduct interviews, and gather on-site information as needed.
- Stay Updated: Continuously monitor developments and trends to ensure that content is timely, relevant, and reflective of current events.
- Storytelling Across Media: Incorporate photography and video content to complement and enhance written stories, creating a dynamic, multimedia experience for audiences.
- Generate Story Ideas: Utilize natural curiosity and proactiveness to research and pitch unique, innovative story ideas that resonate with readers.
- Collaborate with Team Members: Work effectively with editors and colleagues to plan, prioritize, and execute assignments, as part of a cooperative and supportive team environment.
- Meet Deadlines and Stay Organized: Manage time effectively to meet deadlines across digital and print platforms, maintaining an organized workflow under pressure.
- Uphold Journalistic Ethics: Ensure all reporting is accurate, fair, balanced, and in line with journalistic principles and ethical standards.
- Preferred: A degree in journalism or communications is an asset.
