Blue Quills University celebrates 2024 grads

University nuhelot'ine thaiyots'i nistameyimakanak Blue Quills (UnBQ) held its graduation ceremony on June 27, honouring the accomplishments of a long list of graduates.

ST. PAUL – University nuhelot'ine thaiyots'i nistameyimakanak Blue Quills (UnBQ) held its graduation ceremony on June 27, honouring the accomplishments of a long list of graduates.

During the celebration, UnBQ president Sherri Chisan’s speech encouraged the graduates to keep growing. She spoke about the importance of believing in oneself, one’s communities, and their respective Nations. “That will carry us into the future,” she said.

“We must believe in our languages, our knowledges, or ceremonies that are lost,” added Chisan. “And I say we’re honouring Treaty by being here today to celebrate education.”

She explained that education is a key promise in the Treaties.

“We have to do our part to uphold that, to take responsibility for our education as educational institutions but also as students and learners, supporters, directors, or funders... everybody was a part of this journey.”

Chisan also encouraged others to honour the vision and trust “of our ancestors.”

It is important to acknowledge what happened in the past, said Chisan, referring to the former Blue Quills residential school. “But, let’s also acknowledge what’s happening here right now... these achievements by the students.”

“One of the greatest gifts that we can honour and offer to our ancestors and to our future generations is to not let the trauma of colonization and genocide be the whole story. Let's write this new story as we go forward... a story of loving one another and of helping one another,” said Chisan.

UnBQ Board of Governors chair and Saddle Lake Coun. Charles Cardinal also addressed the graduates.

“Each of you navigated challenges, embraced opportunities and growth in ways that have prepared you for the bright future that awaits,” he said, before acknowledging that the graduates’ journeys have not been a solitary path.

“You have been supported by many who believed in you, stood by you and guided you. Let's take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have been instrumental in your success,” said Cardinal.

While the future is bright for the graduates, it is also filled with many unknowns, he said. But Cardinal encouraged them to face those unknowns with confidence.

“You are well prepared to face challenges and seize opportunities.”

Be fearless and chase dreams, he said, because, “the world needs your creativity, your compassion, and your leadership,” whatever path the graduates may choose to walk.
