ST. PAUL – Over the weekend, eight hockey teams from across the province faced off during the U18 Tier 2 hockey tournament held in St. Paul.
The Bow River Bruins emerged as champions after defeating the Sturgeon Mustangs during the gold medal game after overtime and an eight-person shootout.
The Renegades claimed bronze after defeating the Olds Grizzlys.
During the consolation games, the CR Knights from Sturgeon County defeated the host team, the St. Paul Canadiens; while the Edmonton Lightning defeated the Edmonton Sabers.
Christin Zappitelli, the Canadiens' U18 team manager, said while the team may not have claimed gold, she commended the players for the hard-fought battles.
Throughout the duration of the tournament, St. Paul Minor Hockey also collected items for Santa's Food Drive that took place on Dec. 7, with the eight teams from the tournament donating goods for the cause.
"Thanks to all the teams that took part . . . [and] for all the sponsors that helped with our tournament," said Karen Trach, the tournament coordinator.
