Community shows up to support mental health at comedy night

The Mallaig Unity Centre was filled with people in support of mental health on Nov. 4, as the Stand Up For Mental Health comedy show took place.

MALLAIG - The Mallaig Unity Centre was filled with people in support of mental health on Nov. 4, as the Stand Up For Mental Health comedy show took place. The night included a meal catered by the Mallaig Fire Department, entertainment by local musicians, games, plenty of opportunities to bid on live and silent auctions, and of course a few comedians.

The event was put on with a grant from Rural Mental Health network and the Demeria Memorial Fund group. Several volunteers stepped up to help organize the event, according to Rae Michaud, one of the organizers of the evening.

"I can honestly say that we were overwhelmed by the support we received and the evening was a tremendous success," said Michaud.

"The musicians, David the comedian and guests that worked with him for two months to prepare material for the show, and the vendors that took place, the interactive games, all played a role in creating a positive space in which to talk and focus on the mental health topic," she explained.

Along with the Mallaig Fire Department preparing an impressive meal, the Mallaig Recreation Board served beverages, including mocktails, throughout the night.

"There are many people to thank," said Michaud. She noted that a total number raised has not yet been tallied.

Organizers also asked attendees to fill out surveys, which will be reviewed soon to see what the focus should be moving forward, and what courses and resources people would like to see offered locally, according to Michaud.

The Demeria Memorial Fund was created in memory of Tony Demeria, Michaud's brother.

"Tony Demeria was a father, brother, and a son that took his life too soon," reads information presented at the Nov. 4 event. "We want to preserve his memory and provide local support to those in need."
