ST. PAUL – County of St. Paul council has agreed to change the speed limit to 60 km/hour on Range Road 43, from Wenzel Drive south, for a distance of 350 metres.

The road leads to a residential subdivision known as Ernie’s Beach near Laurier Lake.

Division 1 Coun. Darrell Younghans said there has been an issue in the area where people are destroying the speed limit signs.

Previously, the speed limit sign was 30 km/hour, with the speed limit leading to the road being at 80 km/hour.

Younghans said a resident suggested that if the speed limit sign were to be changed to 60 km/hour, “that the signs may stay in place.”

The hope is that the change will help with the situation as the speed transition from 80 km/hour to 60 km/hour won’t be so drastic, according to Younghans. The speed limit will remain 30 km/hour in the residential subdivision, like other subdivisions across the County.

Public Works Director Scott Jeffery noted that the speed limit on the road is somewhat tricky due to its location, explaining that it is a range road leading to a subdivision.

“At the north end of the range road, there are some homes on the east side that we just want to bring awareness to start slowing down a bit because it’s really just a little bit tricky at the moment,” said Jefferey.

Coun. Maxine Fodness noted that speed limit signs are usually posted on roads leading to subdivisions for safety purposes, due to children who may be around.

She then made a motion to approve the item for first reading. The motion was carried.

Coun. Ross Krekoski made a motion to approve the second reading, which passed. And Younghans motioned to proceed for the third reading, which also passed.

Coun. Louie Dechaine motioned to approve the third reading. The motion was approved.

Included in the amended bylaw is also a small change, where vehicles in the County of St. Paul cannot drive over 30 km/hour on any roadway located “within” any residential subdivision.
