A model plane flew off course and crashed into an overhead power line near the St. Paul Regional High School on Monday leaving several homes without power.

A 16-year-old student was flying his P51 Mustang, gas-powered plane in the field behind the high school, during his spare period, when the plane ‘got away from him’ and collided with the overhead power line, taking the line down to the ground.

Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Kotowich said that there were small grass fires on the area surrounding the fallen line but nothing serious enough to extinguish. Fire crews handed over control to the RCMP and ATCO power crews shortly after they arrived. RCMP blocked off access to the roads while ATCO crews worked to repair the fallen line.

Students at the school were instructed to stay in the school and steer clear of the area until crews have finished their work.
