Several charges laid after man tries to flee from police in Smoky Lake area

After responding to a call regarding a man sleeping inside a vehicle, RCMP laid several charges.

SMOKY LAKE - RCMP have laid several charges after responding to a call regarding a man sleeping inside a vehicle.

On Sept. 9 at about 8 a.m., Smoky Lake RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on Victoria Trail. Information given to police stated a person was sleeping inside a vehicle with a firearm visible on the passenger seat.

"When RCMP attended the location, the male then attempted to flee on foot," according to RCMP. "With the assistance of Air Services, Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, EAD Crime Reduction Unit and neighbouring detachments the male was arrested, without incident, a short distance away from vehicle."  

Aaron Robertson, 31, of Viking, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Weapon possession contrary to order x3
  • Unsafe storage of firearms
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm when knowing possession unauthorized
  • Possession of firearm in motor vehicle
  • Possession of restricted or prohibited firearm
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Fail to comply with release order condition x2

Robertson was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 12 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Saskatchewan.

"Smoky Lake RCMP are committed to public safety and reducing crime within Smoky Lake and surrounding areas," reads information provided by police.
