LAKE LOUISE – Lake Louise got so busy Sunday (Aug. 6) the Banff National Park hot spot had to be briefly shut off to most of the public.
Parks Canada, with the assistance of the RCMP, diverted non-residents and guests not staying at hotels away from the extremely popular tourist destination, for a few hours, Sunday evening.
“Parks Canada issued it and the RCMP is supporting their efforts,” said Alberta RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.
Full access to Lake Louise has since been restored.
The number of motorists attempting to enter the village during the rare event is not yet public information.
511 Alberta also helped communicate the message, which was released on its social media at approximately 5:40 p.m.
"Until further notice, RCMP and Parks Canada are advising that there will be no entering Lake Louise, unless a resident or with a hotel reservation, due to overcrowding. All highways remain open," the statement said.
Just before 7 p.m., Lake Louise re-opened to the public.
