Bonnyville 4-H speeches ‘exciting, informative, and well executed’

Bonnyville 4-H members received high praise from the judges for their bravery, wit, and knowledge, during the Bonnyville 4-H District Communications event.

BONNYVILLE – Bonnyville 4-H members received high praise from the judges for their bravery, wit, and knowledge, during the Bonnyville 4-H District Communications event.

The event took place on March 1 at Ardmore School and featured a panel of local judges. Individual club winners at the district level earned the opportunity to move on to regionals.

The 4-H clubs involved included Ardmore Beef, Beaver River Beef, Bonnyville Beef, Iron River Wranglers, Lakeland Longriders, and Scruffy Puppies.

Judge Kylie Getzin gave the presenters tips, including picking a topic that one is passionate about, so they have a well of information to draw from and enthusiasm to engage the audience.

“I thought all the presentations were great today, everybody seemed to be really passionate about what they are speaking on, so well done to everyone,” said Getzin.

Getzin encouraged presenters to work on their eye contact with the judges and continue developing their skills until it becomes easier.

“I know how hard it is to stand up here, believe me I used to be hiding in the back crying the night before because I hated public speaking . . . It gets easier, I promise.”

Judge Ryan Sych commented on the use of humour during the presentations, and how invaluable it is as a tool because everyone loves to laugh.

“All the speeches presented today were exciting, informative, and well executed. I’m blown away at the quality of the speeches,” said Sych.

Sych said public speaking is much like exercising a muscle.

“The more you do the better you get at it, so I really encourage presenters to continue on with public speaking, it will be with you for life... [I]t will help build your future careers, or at least you’ll be the go-to person in the family that they ask to emcee the weddings,” said Sych.

Sych thanked all the families present at the event. He said how nice it was to see all the parents and grandparents showing up to support the kids, and how much that means to a kid.
