Bonnyville Friendship Centre spotlights young artists

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Friendship Centre put the spotlight on talented young artists at a small, upscale gallery exhibit on June 7.

The idea for a youth art exhibition was conceived by Shiloh Prosser, the Bonnyville Friendship Centre’s Indigenous student support worker.

The cultural room at the centre was incorporated into the display. Mood lighting, sparkling water, and chocolate covered strawberries, set a sophisticated atmosphere. Art pieces were exhibited with the care and consideration.

Prosser says she is committed to empowering youth through creative expression. Her vision of showcasing and uplifting young artists led to the creation of the youth art exhibit.

Prosser believes that featuring the works of young artists from diverse backgrounds is important for many reasons.

“Firstly, it provided a platform for these young talents to showcase their creativity, fostering a sense of pride and achievement. This recognition significantly boosted their self-esteem and hopefully motivated them to pursue their artistic passions further,” says Prosser.

“The exhibition highlighted the cultural and creative contributions of the youth, particularly from the Indigenous community, promoting greater understanding and appreciation of their perspectives.”

The event was inclusive, and Prosser highlighted how the event bridged the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, “fostering mutual respect and understanding.”

“By providing a shared space for these young artists to express themselves and connect through their creativity, the exhibition underscored the commonalities and unique perspectives each participant brought to the table.

Prosser says the kids’ faces lit up seeing their artwork displayed.

Artist Piper Lesyk, 10, got the most votes for her art piece, and said, “I’m very excited that I won and feel happy and thankful that others liked my art.”
