Bonnyville Legion hosts turkey cook-off in support of food bank

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Royal Canadian Legion hosted its seventh annual Turkey Blast Challenge, where cooks went head-to-head to see who could cook the best deep-fried, barbecued, or infrared turkey.

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Royal Canadian Legion hosted its seventh annual Turkey Blast Challenge, where cooks went head-to-head to see who could cook the best deep-fried, barbecued, or infrared turkey.

A community turkey dinner followed with admission by donation to the food bank.

The event took place on Oct. 12 at the Legion Hall where everyone was welcome to come and enjoy a full turkey dinner over the Thanksgiving weekend. Volunteers served up hot plates of food and people mingled in the hall that buzzed with conversation.

Organizer Lorna Elchuk said, “The cook-off was good. . . we have been doing this for seven years. There are many volunteers that help out every year.”

The winner of this year's Turkey Blast Challenge was Kelly Irwin.

Elchuk said the event is not only a friendly competition and fundraiser, but a social event that offers anyone the chance to enjoy a hot turkey dinner with the community.

“We just hope we can help the community and have a turkey dinner for anyone who wants to come out for it. The day is busy, and everyone enjoyed the meal,” said Elchuk.
