BONNYVILLE – Jessie Heisler’s work as an advocate and educator for sexual violence prevention and gender justice has been recognized with a King Charles III Coronation Medal.
Heisler is the Prevention and Community Engagement Manager at the Dragonfly Counselling and Support Centre and has been creating educational programs about sexual violence that she also facilitates.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal acknowledges citizens who have had a positive impact on their communities. Heisler’s work in sexual violence prevention paired with a rural lens has offered programs to underserved areas.
Heisler explained that she was one of 40 recipients of the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Canadian Women’s Foundation, in recognition of exceptional work towards gender equality and justice.
“The foundation noted that they saw this as a rare opportunity to champion changemakers in Canada’s often underseen and undervalued non-profit sector, and I am so pleased to share this honour with so many dedicated leaders in the space,” said Heisler.
Amber Cook, who works in communications for the Dragonfly Counselling and Support Centre, said Heisler “exemplifies the spirit of community service, demonstrates exemplary initiative, leadership, and creativity in her service to others.”
"Jessie’s Rural Response to Sexual Abuse Training has transformed survivor support in rural, remote, northern, and Indigenous communities with limited services, giving staff skills to respond to sexual violence with care and effectiveness,” said Cook.
Additionally, Heisler was awarded the Cold Lake Women of Influence Award for Community and Volunteerism this year.
“She serves as a role model for others in the community and inspires others to engage in volunteer service. She improves the overall quality of life of individuals and the community as a whole,” said Cook.
