BONNYVILLE - A lunch-hour roadside check conducted by Bonnyville RCMP on Feb. 24 resulted in the seizure of weapons and drugs.

RCMP were doing the roadside check with a pickup truck that had two occupants, on 66th Street just south of 50th Avenue in Bonnyville.

"While the member was running the driver’s documents, the driver fled," according to RCMP. The vehicle broke down less than a kilometre away, and both occupants of the vehicle exited and began fleeing on foot, report police.

"The member pulled up to the truck and took chase on foot catching up to both males and placing them under arrest," according to information from RCMP.

The men were allegedly found to be in possession of "a handgun, ammunition, a knife, multiple brass knuckles, crystal meth, suspected fentanyl, hundreds of non-illicit tablets, various drug paraphernalia and thousands of dollars in cash."

Derek Drake, 35, of Cold Lake, and Andrew Heigh, 33, of Edmonton, have been charged with a multitude of weapons offences, possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

Drake was also charged with flight from police, driving while prohibited and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

"Bail hearings were held and both males were remanded in custody and are awaiting their first court appearance," according to RCMP.
