Four arrested after axe fight in Kehewin

Four people are headed to court after an altercation at a residence in Kehewin left two men with injuries from an axe fight.

On March 14, around 9:30 p.m., the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment received a 911 call reporting that two men were fighting with axes in Kehewin. RCMP officers attended and located one of the men in the basement.

The 31-year-old Kehewin man, who was already wanted on outstanding warrants for being unlawfully at large from Fort Saskatchewan, was arrested without incident. At the time of the arrest, several injuries were noted on the 31-year-old man.

The other man involved, a 35-year-old Edmonton resident, had fled the scene but was located at a nearby residence. He was arrested without incident with a noted injury to the head.

Through investigation, officers learned that bother the 31-year-old and 35-year-old men arrived at the crime scene residence with two females, an 18-year-old St. Paul woman and a 35-year-old Kehewin woman. The four were traveling in a stolen vehicle.

Police learned from witnesses that both men had struck on another with axes. At one point, both the 18-year-old and 35-year-old women held down the 31-year-old man so that the other man could strike him with an axe.

The women were located and arrested by the Bonnyville RCMP officers and transported to the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment. Both men were treated for their injuries at the Bonnyville health centre. They were transported to the Bonnyvlle RCMP Detachment once they were fit for incarceration.

All four people are facing criminal charges.

The 35-year-old man, who sustained injuries to the face, was on court compelling conditions from two previous pending charges of obstructing a peace officer and assault. He has a lengthy criminal record.

He remains in police custody facing new charges of assault with a weapon, assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, possession of stolen property and four counts of failing to comply with conditions. He will appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on March 22.

The 31-year-old man, who sustained injuries to his back and arms, was on court compelling conditions for previous charges of possession of stolen property and also has a lengthy criminal record. He was put before a Justice of the Peace for his outstanding warrant of unlawfully at large and received $500 cash bail.

It was determined by a Justice of the Peace that he should be released on court compelling documents, with conditions to appear in Bonnyville court on April 19. He will be facing charges of assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, mischief over $5,000 and three counts of failing to comply with conditions. He was released from police custody once his bail was paid.

The 35-year-old woman was released on court compelling documents with conditions for charges of assault and possession of stolen property to appear in Bonnyville court on April 26.

The 18-year-old woman was on court compelling conditions from previous charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of marijuana, assault and failing to comply with conditions. She was brought before a Justice of the Peace for charges of assault, possession of stolen property and four counts of failing to comply with conditions.

She was remanded to appear before Bonnyville Provincial Court on March 22.

Single vehicle rollover

On March 10, a vehicle was taken by a 28-year-old man from Muriel Lake without the owner's consent from a residence in Kehewin.

The vehicle was later involved in a single vehicle roll over in the Redwater RCMP Detachment area. The man was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan for injuries.

Redwater RCMP attended the hospital and arrested the man, who was taken into police custody once fit for incarceration. The man was later released from police custody and charged with taking a motor vehicle without consent, from Bonnyville RCMP, and several offences under the Traffic Safety Act, from Redwater RCMP.

RCMP arrest impaired driver despite seat swap

On March 13, the Bonnyville RCMP received multiple 911 calls for service regarding an impaired driver on Highway 659, heading westbound into Bonnyville. The complaints reported the vehicle was speeding and swerving into the oncoming lane.

The vehicle was located by members of the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment, who conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle. Vehicle occupants were observed switching seats in the vehicle just prior to speaking to police.

The original driver, a 29-year-old Glendon man, was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He was transported to the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment where he provided samples of his breath resulting in readings just under three times the legal limit.

The man was released once sober on court compelling documents facing charges of impaired operation, impaired over 80 and dangerous driving.

The original passenger, a 28-year-old Lloydminster man, was found to be under GDL license regulations along with having alcohol in his system, which resulted in a license suspension.

Vehicle thefts

On March 10, the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment received a complaint that a blue 2007 Kia Sportage with the license plate BSF3749 was stolen from a rural residence near Township Road 634 and Range Road 464 in Iron River. This vehicle is still outstanding.

On March 15, around 6 p.m., the Bonnyville RCMP Detchment got a 911 call for service reporting that a red 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 was stolen from a work site just east of Bonnyville. The vehicle was recovered later that day, damaged. The vehicle was observed driving through town before it was ditched and recovered by police. This file is still under investigation and anyone with information regarding this theft is asked to contact the Bonnyville RCMP.

The following day, around 5:30 p.m. on March 16, the RCMP received a 911 complaint of a break and enter to a residence on Lakeshore Drive in Bonnyville that occurred sometime during the day. The homeowner reported that money was missing from his counter and his red/burgundy 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer was stolen. The vehicle's license plate is ZXN717. Police are asking anyone to come forward if they have information about this break and enter.
