Heavy machinery and lots of fun at public works open house in Bonnyville

The MD of Bonnyville’s public works shop held an open house for National Public Works Week, May 25.

BONNYVILLE - The MD of Bonnyville’s public works shop held an open house for National Public Works Week, May 25.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., heavy machinery was on display, along with the opportunity to meet some of the operators.

Staff dumped sand in the parking lot for children to play in next to a dozer. There was free swag for children including a skid steer toy, sand pail, and shovel.

A colouring station featuring an M.D public works colouring book was available to the kids, as well as a colouring contest.

Many happy children were climbing aboard the massive equipment, playing in the sand, and asking questions about the machinery.

MD of Bonnyville Coun. Josh Crick enjoyed the event with his children, saying the free barbecue is always a hit with the kids.

Crick says the open house is not only a way for children to experience the equipment firsthand, but to offer the public transparency about where their tax dollars are going.

According to the M.D of Bonnyville website, “The MD of Bonnyville has a well-established network of primary highways (372 km), secondary highways (493 km) and local roads (2757 km), within its boundaries.”

Efforts to maintain these roads in the area’s often harsh climate is a big job. From Snow ploughing, dust control, grooming, mowing, sweeping, repairs, and more, there are many ways to keep roads maintained within the municipality.
