Knowledge Keeper teaches unique fish scale art workshop in Bonnyville

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Friendship centre hosted a unique workshop, teaching participants how to make art using the scales of whitefish. The workshop was held on Feb. 20 and facilitated by Cynthia Gamache, the Director of Crisis Support for the Bonnyville Friendship centre.

Gamache said the whitefish scales had to be carefully washed and dyed to achieve the vibrant colours.

“Our Knowledge Keeper, Ruth Bellegarde, graciously handled this time-consuming process for us. Ruth also facilitated the workshop, guiding participants through the intricate technique of layering the scales to create a stunning 3D effect,” said Gamache.

Due to this 3D effect, Gamache explained that fish scale art is often displayed in shadow boxes.

Gathering to make art in the community offers a sense of connection for participants, and Gamache explained how important it is to teach the cultural significant of these unique mediums.

“Offering these workshops is a meaningful way to help our community connect with culture, learn new skills, and carry these teachings forward to future generations,” said Gamache.

The Friendship Centre is a place of reconciliation and community building for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, and accessibility is a key aspect of their programming.

“We are truly grateful to provide these opportunities free of charge, recognizing that financial barriers often prevent many from participating,” said Gamache. “Our programs and services are inclusive to everyone.”
