Three new faces elected to Kehewin council

Kehewin Cree Nation held its official band council elections on March 17, which saw four councillors, re-elected and three new faces enter council.

Ernest Gadwa received 188 votes, Eric Gadwa and Willie John both brought in 182 votes and Rodney John picked up 160 votes, as all four councillors were re-elected.

The three new faces will be Vernon Watchmaker, who finished with 166 votes, Gordon Gadwa, who recieved with 164 votes and Jason Mountain who narrowly grabbed the final spot with 158 votes.

Mountain beat out fellow candidate Trevor John, who finished with 157 votes, by one vote.

Gordon Alger, Electoral Officer with the First Nations Governance out of Meadow Lake, Sk, confirmed the 2014 election results, which saw 33 people throw their names in the hat to run for council. A total of 14 candidates received over 100 votes, while seven candidates received fewer than 50 votes apiece.

Residents of Kehewin were scheduled to select their chief, with that election taking place on March 24 between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kehewin Band Hall.

The three candidates running for chief were incumbent Eric Gadwa, Rodney John and Willie John.
