GLENDON – An open house was hosted at the brand-new Fire and Iron Fitness Centre in Glendon on Aug. 10.

Village of Glendon representatives say they listened to public feedback asking for a community gym, and created a 24/7 fitness facility complete with showers, studio rental space, Wi-Fi, water fill stations, and modern equipment.

“A feedback survey was put out and it was a resounding yes for the gym,” said Glendon’s Deputy Mayor Daryn Galatiuk. “The [Canadian] climate makes it difficult to exercise sometimes – it's hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. The gym will make it easier for people to exercise and benefit their physical and mental health. It was expensive, but there is no price on health.”

The 24/7 gym will be operated with fobs, providing a space for those with difficult schedules, and eliminating the need for 24/7 staffing.

Glendon Mayor Nicholas Werstiuk said, “It’s more than just a gym, it’s a community hub. We wanted to bring that here – to have a social place for people to come all year round.”

Galatiuk explained that the gym is a community service and not-for-profit, while Werstiuk commented that the goal was to keep the gym membership fees low.

“The cost of living is already high enough. We don’t want to burden our residents with increased prices,” said Werstiuk.

The mayor added, “The Village of Glendon is more of a team than a council. We all want to support the people, and we worked together to make this happen.”
