COLD LAKE - For the first time, residents in Cold Lake may soon have a place to roller skate.
Roller Haus Roller Skating is bringing the activity to the community with upcoming drop-in sessions at the Imperial Oil Arena in the Cold Lake Energy Centre.
Skating dates are set for June 7 and July 19, with family-friendly drop-in sessions taking place at the Cold Lake Energy Centre. Admission is $5, with skate rentals available for an additional $5. Sponsored by the Lakeland Lady Killers roller derby team, the events will also offer information for anyone interested in joining the team.
To help launch the initiative, a fundraiser will also be held on April 5 at the Canex Mall from 12:30 to 4 p.m., aiming to raise money for rental skates and support the growing interest in local roller skating.
Lynn Folkard, the driving force behind Roller Haus, says this has been a passion project for her.
“It was something that I really wanted to do for myself personally. And then it just kind of snowballed.”
She shared the real estate idea with a friend and client at her business, Crew Haus Barbers and Stylists, explaining that it involves finding a venue for people to roller skate. Her friend responded enthusiastically, saying, “I think you're really on to something here.”
A visit to Rollers Roller Rink in Edmonton, Canada’s largest roller rink, inspired Folkard. She connected with the owner, who offered advice and encouragement.
Momentum has been picking up.
The April 5 fundraiser will feature hair demonstrations, a DJ, skate demos by the Lakeland Lady Killers, and a roller disco performance.
To support the cause, a silent auction with donations from local businesses will be held both in-person and online.
The Cold Lake Energy Centre will also host family-friendly drop-in skating sessions, with a $5 entrance fee and $5 skate rentals. Sponsored by the Lakeland Lady Killers roller derby team, the event will also provide information on joining the team.
Skaters are encouraged to wear fun outfits but must bring their own safety gear.
