Annual FCSS event offered awareness for all ages in Elk Point

Events, programs and involvement for all ages and a wide array of interests were on display at Wednesday’s Community Awareness Night, hosted by St. Paul Regional FCSS and Family Resource Network at the Allied Arts and Leisure Centre. 

ELK POINT – Events, programs and involvement for all ages and a wide array of interests were on display at Wednesday’s Community Awareness Night, hosted by St. Paul Regional FCSS and Family Resource Network at the Allied Arts and Leisure Centre. 

A total of 36 displays, ranging from the Town of Elk Point’s array of accomplishments and activities during the year, to information on the proposed Alberta Pension Plan and the help offered by the Eastern Alberta Region Victim Services lined the centre’s walls, with a pair of back-to-back lineups of organizations and service agencies stretching most of its length.

Local groups including the Elk Point and District Chamber of Commerce, Elk Point Community Lions and TOPS, Elk Point Auto Club were in the lineup, along with Portage College, the CALP programming at Elk Point Library and an array of upcoming programs and events being offered by FCSS in Elk Point in the coming months.

Activities for children and youths included everything from the after-school drop-in sessions and evening events at ‘The Garage” youth centre and ‘Kidz Rock’ activities at Elk Point Baptist Church to both 4-H involvement in both Beef and Multi-Club programs, activities including minor ball, Elk Point Skating Club, Pond Hockey, Avalanche hockey, FAME Dance Studio and Elk Point Soccer Club, Jack and Jill Playschool and story time resuming in a few weeks at Elk Point Municipal Library.

Arts and culture activities for both youth and adults include the revival of the Elk Point Ukrainian Dance Club, Elk Point Community Choir, the Allied Arts dinner theatre, whose pre-Christmas event is ‘Not Even a Moose’ and Elk Point Theatre Project, whose spring presentation will be ‘Shrek, the Musical’.

This year there were also a number of displays from other areas, including Lakeland Employment Services, Labour Force Link, FASD, Franco Acoueil, Mannawanis Native Friendship Centre, Native Counseling Services, PRIDE St. Paul, the Primary Care Network, Simply Unwed Paralegal Services and the Capella Centre, all adding up with the local groups to offer a wide array of information to all those who attended this annual event.
