The annual Plamondon Ladies Bonspiel is set to return on Jan. 10-12, and this time around, teams will be taking to the ice wearing bell-bottom pants, leisure suits, and any other wardrobe pieces that will help with the event’s 1970s theme.
Rachelle Plamondon, the secretary of the Plamondon Curling Club, explained that a $260 fee per team includes three guaranteed games, supper, as well as a chance to win prizes for having the best retro outfit .
“After supper, we have a dress theme kind of thing, and then we give a prize for the best dressed,” Plamondon told Lakeland This Week.
The Ladies Bonspiel, which normally draws two dozen teams from across the region, has a unique theme each year. Recent bonspiels have included curlers wearing specific colours as well as a beach theme. When planning the 2025 edition of the event, Plamondon continued, organizers mulled over different themes, and decided that the 1970s was a cool idea to run with.
“That carries a lot of variety of themes within the 70s for the teams to look at and dress up as a team,” she said.
The annual Ladies Bonspiel, Plamondon said, is good for the community as it gets people out for a weekend of fun and good times while playing a sport they enjoy. Furthermore, the curling competition gives members of participating clubs from the region an opportunity to sit down, socialize and talk about what their respective curling clubs are currently doing.
“In the middle of winter, I find people are itching to come out and do something fun and it’s really not about the winning…the teams come in and they have so much fun,” she said.
Teams have until Jan. 3 to register for the 2025 Ladies Bonspiel, and can do so by calling or texting Rachelle Plamondon at 780-404-5570.
