BREAKING: New Lac La Biche park will now cost $10 million

Mayor says big leap in park price has "blind-sided" council

The budget for the new McArthur Park renovation project began at $6.3 million, then it jumped to $7.3 million with the addition of a skatepark, and now the final plan for the new McArthur Park in Lac La Biche is at more than $10 million.

Councillors showed surprise over the increased cost that was announced during a briefing discussion with planners and senior municipal administrators on Tuesday morning.

The over-budget expense don't include future upgrades to the Jubilee Hall and former curling rink building... which could add an additional $6 million over future years.

When councillors asked administration how the budget ballooned – apparently without their knowledge – some blame was put onto employees who are no longer employed by the municipality.  Others said they had only come into the project in recent weeks and didn't know what had happened before.

Lac La Biche County Mayor Paul Reutov has asked for an itemized report on what was initially believed to be a three-year, $7.3 million project.

"We definitely need that report, and secondly, what are our options moving forward?" Reutov said as his council remained silent during what the mayor said was "blindsided" information on the ongoing park project.

Other projects taking place in the community, including a $32.5 million Main Street project and a $49 million aquatic centre, could provide the same sticker shock, says one councillor.

"I think what we are experiencing with McArthur Park is going to be seen with the pool," said councillor Kevin Pare. "I believe this is happening at the pool too... and we'll be handcuffed and have to do it."

Some senior administrators with the municipality said the pool project is rolling at the budgeted price.

Lakelandtoday.ca and the Lac La Biche POST newsroom will have more details on the discussion and McAruthur Park planning soon.
