Craigend community barbecue to take place on Aug. 28

The Craigend Community BBQ-which has been a popular community event for the past four years-is set to take place on Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Craigend Community Centre.

CRAIGEND - The Craigend Community BBQ, which has been a popular community event for the past four years, is set to take place on Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Craigend Community Centre.

Molly Fyten, a member of the Craigend Recreation and Agricultural Society, said this year’s community BBQ will feature a variety of fun activities.

These include live musical entertainment, along with outdoor games for all ages such as cornhole and ladder ball, as well as kid-specific activities hosted by the Lac La Biche County Fun Van.

“This event takes place outside in the area behind our hall, where there is a playground that kids love, and everyone gets to enjoy a beautiful scene of the river,” Fyten told Lakeland This Week.

Fyten continued by saying that the annual community gathering will have a potluck BBQ, and those who attend are asked to bring a lawn chair, along with a potluck item such as a side dish or a dessert, as burgers will be provided. Furthermore, it will take place rain or shine.

“If it rains, we will be set up in the hall,” she stated.

In addition to good food and fun times, this year’s Craigend Community BBQ will also feature display tables by Lac La Biche County and the municipality’s agriculture department.

The event, she explained, does not raise money and is free to attend. She added that the hall pays for the event, typically with sponsorship from Lac La Biche County.

“It has also been referred to as a "Neighbourhood Block Party" in the past, when sponsored by the County,” she said.

Fyten said while the agricultural society does put on an annual brunch for Mother’s Day, it does not always have a Father’s Day event. Therefore, fathers and grandfathers who attend will receive a small gift in lieu of this.

According to Fyten, since its inception in 2021, the annual Craigend Community BBQ has been a big draw attendance-wise.

“Every summer the crowd has been great- it is generally well attended with anywhere from 60-100 people,” she said.
