Lac La Biche Disability Services opens downtown location

The organization, which has been helping adults with developmental disabilities in the Lac La Biche area for the past 45 years, moved into the building on 101 Ave. on June 1.

LAC LA BICHE - On Nov. 21, Lac La Biche Disability Services celebrated the grand opening of its new location on Lac La Biche’s Main Street in the former Cascade Flowers location.  The organization – which has been assisting adults with developmental disabilities in the community for 45 years – had previously been operating out of the ground floor of an apartment building in a residential area two blocks north of the community's downtown.

The move to the new location was celebrated with an official open house on November 21.

Executive director Shauna Quintal says staff and board members wanted the public to come by the new location to enjoy some snacks and refreshments while learning about the work that is done by the long-running community organization.

“We invited the community,” Quintal told Lakeland This Week, adding that those who came to the event had an opportunity to socialize and ask questions.

According to Quintal, the organization, that operates six assisted living homes in the Lac La Biche area, purchased the new building last year and completely renovated the interior. Since moving to the new location on Lac La Biche’s main street, she explained, the organization has enjoyed increased visibility, with more people stopping in to inquire about the services offered.

The new building also has more elbow room, including room for growth, a kitchen space for program activities, and a flex-room that is open for the community to use for various events such as craft nights and meetings.

“I think our location now is perfect for us,” Quintl said. “We have more office space. We have a fully functioning kitchen, and we have ample storage.”

Lac La Biche Disability Services is always looking for new volunteers and partners to assist with programming. Quintal hopes the new downtown space will bring in more community members who would like to help.
