Lac La Biche Lakers win weekend games

The Lac La Biche Lakers continued their winning streak on Jan. 24 and 25 with victories over the Northern Alberta Lightning and the High Prairie Red Wings.

LAC LA BICHE - The Lac La Biche Lakers continued their winning streak on Jan. 24 and 25 with victories over the Northern Alberta Lightning and the High Prairie Red Wings.

The Lakers, who joined the National Junior Hockey League (NJHL) in October for their inaugural season, defeated the Lightning 8-2 on Jan. 24 at the Bold Centre. The team went on the road the following day where they faced off against the High Prairie Red Wings at the Peavine Arena, winning 3-0.

The Lakers hold third spot in their five-team NJHL Northern Division, and have won six games in a row.

Last Friday, the Northern Alberta Lightning scored their only goals in the first period, in what was largely a one-sided contest. After the Lightning acquired a 2-0 lead, the Lakers got into action and scored four consecutive goals in the first period.

Kaden Cardinal, Larry Flett, Regan Anderson, and Patrick Bourque scored one goal each before the first period ended.

Both NJHL squads remained off the scoreboard until the third period, when Cardinal got the puck past Lightning goalie Oliver Levy two more times. Lakers players Dahlen Ford and Carl Horseman scored one goal each to finish the game with an 8-2 win.

Flett, Cardinal, and Braden Swampy scored the trio of goals in Saturday’s away game in High Prairie that gave the team the 3-0 victory over the Red Wings.

The Lakers will be at the Frog Lake Arena on Jan. 31 for a game against the Gibbons Pioneers. The team returns to home ice on Feb. 1 to take on the Edson Eagles.
