LAC LA BICHE - The large wooden entrance sign welcoming people to Lac La Biche heading north on Highway 36 was knocked over and heavily damaged following an incident that occurred on Dec. 30.
According to Sgt. Trevor Cardinal of the Lac La Biche RCMP detachment, on Dec. 30, Mounties received a complaint of a northbound tractor trailer unit driving erratically and causing people to drive into the ditch on Highway 36. On Thursday morning, remnants of the sign still lay scattered on the ground next to the highway.
“The tractor trailer unit was located in the east ditch after it struck the Lac La Biche Welcome sign,” Cardinal told Lakeland Today. “Fortunately, no involved parties required medical attention."
The driver of the tractor trailer unit, a 45-year-old man from Vermilion, has been charged with Criminal Code and provincial offences, including dangerous operation of a conveyance, refusal to provide breath samples, and transporting liquor in an open container, according to RCMP.
The driver is schedule to appear in court on Jan. 13 in Lac La Biche.
