LAC LA BICHE - Throughout the winter months, Lac La Biche County resident Tina Skakun can be found at the local curling rink participating in the sport she has been doing since the age of five.
“It’s a sport I’ve always enjoyed, and I’ve been playing recreationally for many years,” says Skakun.
During the curling season, Skakun also participates in bonspiels hosted around Lac La Biche and at rinks in other communities. These include the Lac La Biche Curling Club’s mixed bonspiel, held annually in April, as well as the Ladies’ Curling Bonspiel, which is taking place this year on March 14 and 15.
The Ladies’ Bonspiel, she said, is a fantastic event. Over the years, her team has had some success, at times winning prizes in the competition.
“It’s a great opportunity to connect with an amazing group of women, have fun, and enjoy a wonderful winter sport,” she says.
Renee Richard, a member of the Lac La Biche Curling Club and a director with the board, says the Ladies Curling Bonspiel is now in its fourth year.
“The theme this year for the bonspiel is Around the World . . . hopefully the teams will be able to come up with some unique ideas,” says Richard.
The 2025 edition of the Lac La Biche-based curling competition will feature an A, B, and C event winner format, depending on how many teams register. Typically, the bonspiel draws 8 to 12 teams.
