LAKELAND - On Jan. 27, students at several schools within the Northern Lights Public Schools division (NLPS) participated in fun and engaging activities as part of Family Literacy Day.
Nicole Garner, communications and public relations manager for NLPS, stated in addition to Family Literacy Day events, some schools also celebrated Literacy Week, and hosted activities every day of the week.
“We have schools who host events on Family Literacy Day and celebrate Literacy Week every year,” Garner told Lakeland This Week.
Garner said there were various kinds of literacy-related activities for students to participate in, including a program called ‘Reading Buddies,’ along with events where special guests such as elders, grandparents, parents and community members were invited to read with students.
According to information from NLPS, Cold Lake Elementary School, as part of Family Literacy Day events, invited families to spend the afternoon reading together, with parents, relatives and family friends joining students in classrooms. There were reading stations set up, along with book-themed quizzes.
Glendon School hosted literacy-related activities throughout the week, including a “Wear Words Day” and a day dedicated to students dressing up as book characters.
Students at École Plamondon School were involved in a “Special Person Read” event where guests were invited to share their favourite books.
And Elder Jim White visited Kikino School to read with students, who dressed up as their favourite book characters.
These celebrations, Garner explained, are a great way to get students excited about literacy and provides opportunities for students to showcase what they have learned.
“It is also one of the initiatives related to our division priority to increase student achievement, which includes a focus on literacy and numeracy in Kindergarten to Grade 6,” Garner stated.
