LAC LA BICHE – On March 8, under bright and warm late winter skies, a large group of people gathered on the frozen surface of Lac La Biche Lake next to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park for the second-annual Elks on Ice event.
The day of fun winter activities was hosted by the Lac La Biche Elks Lodge #470.
Volunteers were on site during the event to give people instruction on how to tie hooks, while providing coaching on how to properly ice fish.
Throughout the duration of the event, members of the local Elks lodge served up free hamburgers, hot dogs, and hot drinks to people who turned out for the event.
Karen Charest and her sons, Walker and Weston, were among the large turnout of families who cast lines through holes in the ice in the hopes of catching fish.
The annual event, she said, helps get kids away from screens and outside for a day of fishing and fun.
“I love that it inspires children to get out there and learn how to fish and enjoy the great outdoors,” Charest told Lakeland This Week.
Andrew Snook, and his daughter, Elandra, also showed up at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park for the 2025 Elks on Ice event, which he says is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together.
“It’s just great to come out with the kids,” Snook said.
