Peace officer cadets learn emergency driving skills

LAC LA BICHE - The roar of engines and squeal of tires could be heard across the pavement at the Lac La Biche airport over the last week.

Cadets in the Community Peace Officer Training Program at the Law Enforcement Training Centre in Lac La Biche spent part of the first week of April learning and honing their emergency driving skills at the airport's air tanker base.

The 16 cadets were joined by four peace officers from different areas of Alberta also taking their emergency driver training, as well as a paramedic taking the emergency vehicle operating certification.

During the week-long sessions, candidates were taught and practiced a variety of practical skills, with orange cones set up around the tarmac for the driving courses. The skills included driver mannerisms, vehicle dynamics, skid and recovery, emergency response, as well as vehicle checks and maintenance.

Te practical tests were partnered with in-class teaching to prepare the participants for final certification testing at the end of the week. The training has also involved night-driving drills.

The emergency vehicle training is one component of the Law Enforcement Training Centre programs offered to new recruits looking for employment in law enforcement roles and existing police officers needing re-certifications or additional training.
