Plamondon winner takes home $4,970 after humane society raffle

Shirley Michaud was more than a bit surprised when she learned she was this year's winner.

PLAMONDON - When Shirley Michaud bought a ticket for this year’s Lac La Biche Regional Humane Society 50/50 jackpot, she wasn’t expecting to win, only to support a good cause.

So, when the Plamondon resident learned that she had won $4,970 from the $9,940 worth of tickets sold during the annual fundraiser for the local animal shelter, she was a bit surprised but nonetheless quite happy with her win.

“I am so excited to have won the 50/50 from the Humane Society,” Michaud told Lakeland This Week, adding that she had also entered into last year’s raffle. “It is wonderful to see that so many people supported their fundraiser in support of the great work that they do.”

As for what Michaud intends to do with her substantial winnings, she has no immediate plans for her winnings.

“I’ll think of something though,” she said with a smile.

The Lac La Biche Regional Human Society holds a raffle every year to raise money for things that are needed at the shelter, says manager Jewels Hampshire. According to Hampshire, the annual 50/50 raffle is a great help to the shelter as it receives half of the proceeds to help with projects, vet bills, and general supplies that are needed on a day-to-day basis. Funds from the recent raffle will also go toward expansion plans at the facility.

“This year it is to go towards the new isolation/intake building for dogs to help the prevention of disease transition,” she stated.

This year’s raffle began on July 1 and ran to July 16. Unlike previous raffles, the society didn’t run out of the 2,500 tickets available this year, selling 2,191 on 201 orders. Also keeping this year’s profits, a little lower than in previous raffle years, the online platform that runs the raffle takes a cut of the total amount.

Hampshire says shelter staff ... and the animals they serve ... are very happy with the support once again shown by the community.
