Portage College hosts third annual 'What the Duck' event

The event featured a variety of fun and silly games involving ducks. For this year, the Student Association of Portage College added an online scavenger hunt to reach students across all Portage College campuses.

LAC LA BICHE – On Feb. 14, Portage College students, staff, and visitors to the post-secondary institution were able to play silly games for the chance to win prizes while enjoying food and refreshments at the third annual ‘What the Duck is going on?!?’ event.

The annual Valentine’s Day initiative, which is hosted by the Students’ Association of Portage College (SAPC), took place inside of the Voyageur Grill at the Lac La Biche Campus over the noon hour.

Lisa Wesley, regional coordinator for the SAPC, explained that in addition to putting on the Valentine’s Day event, the organization also decided to have a virtual event called the ‘What the Duck?!? Online Scavenger Hunt’.

The idea for this virtual event, which ran from Feb. 4-14, stemmed from the SAPC’s desire to create an engaging activity that would connect students across Portage College’s diverse campuses.

“The online component was added this year to help reach online students, with an interactive and enjoyable experience for all students, on campus, or online, before they go into Reading Week,” Wesley told Lakeland This Week. “It leads up to our annual What the Duck is going on?!? event.”

Those who were at the Portage College Lac La Biche campus for the duck-focused activity session took part in fun activities as a Nerf duck hunt, a duck race with rubber ducks in a pool, as well as duck Tic-Tac-Toe for the chance to win prizes.

Prizes were available for both the in-person and online events.

Wesley said initiatives like this encourage student engagement and participation, foster a sense of community among students - especially the influx of new international students on campus - and enhance overall the student experience at Portage College.

“While it serves as a fun and interactive experience, the primary goal is to strengthen community bonds and promote student involvement,” she said. “By participating, students contribute to a vibrant and inclusive campus culture.”
