LAC LA BICHE - On Thursday mornings, a group of seniors from the Lac La Biche area can be found at McArthur Place, sharing friendly conversation over cups of coffee.
The Coffee and Connections program is offered by Lac La Biche County FCSS for seniors over 55 years old, says Kristen Shewchuk, a community outreach worker with FCSS who helps to put on the free weekly social gatherings.
The event helps bring people together over a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
“Everyone is welcome, and it is a drop-in group so there is no pressure . . . just come when you can,” Shewchuk told Lakeland This Week.
In addition to enjoying hot drinks and snacks, and spending time together, those who participate in the Coffee and Connections sessions can also listen to guest speakers.
Once a month, Shewchuk tries to bring in presenters to discuss topics that are important and relevant to the group. Some examples of these subjects include a session on preparing a will, Alberta Parks, and community development.
Coffee and Connections has been running for the past couple of years. According to Shewchuk, the program is offered through most of the year, with a couple of breaks during holidays.
While participants and FCSS staff members normally meet in the Tea Room, during the warmer months, they like to sit outside on the deck of McArthur Place.
The Coffee and Connections program, Shewchuk said, is essential meant to provide an opportunity for residents to meet and socialize.
“I think it is important to have a place where people can come together and just be who they are in the moment enjoying time with others.”
