Lac La Biche firefighters weren’t putting out fires with their water pumper truck last Wednesday, but they used it for another cause as they cleaned off cars during a fundraising car wash and barbecue in the parking lot of Centennial Arena.

The event was hosted by the Lac La Biche Fire Department, Lac La Biche County and the Lac La Biche Post to help raise money for the Slave Lake residents affected by the devastating fire that swept over the town and destroyed countless homes and buildings. Last week’s event raised close to $3,000 for the Canadian Red Cross.

“Anything for a good cause,” said LLB firefighter Brad Bow as he washed cars at the four-hour long event.

Most of the proceeds were raised from the car wash, which saw more than 50 cars and trucks hosed down and cleaned by local firefighters but some of funds raised came from private and corporate donations, said Natasha Forneris, one of the volunteers at the fundraiser.

“People are really generous to the cause,” she said.

The event also saw local musical talent Desjarlais and Company get up onstage to entertain guests who enjoyed a burger or two off the barbecue.
