LAC LA BICHE – On March 21, members of Lac La Biche Whitecaps Swim Club took to the water at Portage Pool to compete in the club’s annual swim-a-thon.
According to coach Jennifer Okrainec, 25 swimmers suited up, donning goggles and swim caps, to participate in the event, with the goal of raising money for the club.
“Swim-a-thon is our main fundraising event held every year by the swim club,” Okrainec said.
According to information from the Lac La Biche Whitecaps Swim Club, the combined 25 swimmers swam a total of 89 km during this year's event.
Leading up to the fundraisers, swimmers seek sponsors and set goals on how many laps they will complete. Swimming all those laps in the pool also requires plenty of training, and competitors get ready by attending regular weekly practices held at Portage Pool.
Throughout the winter season, members of the Lac La Biche Whitecaps Swim Club have competed in swim meets in Edmonton and Fort McMurray, said Okrainec. The club runs three sessions a year and started its spring session on March 24.
The Whitecaps are also looking for more members to jump into the pool.
“Numbers are down a bit, but we are trying to offer splashers groups to get young swimmers started and interested in swimming. We have 10 registered competitive swimmers and 15 fitness and learn-to-race swimmers,” Okrainec said.
A total amount raised was not available.
