For local students, last Thursday’s Lakeland Sports Alberta Association track and field districts event was more than a competition, it was thrill.
“I really like competing, especially when you jump,” said Ecole Plamondon Grade 8 student Hina Basargin, who got first place in the intermediate girls high jump competition. “It gets you hyped up.”
Students from Ecole Plamondon, Ecole Beausejour, Dr. Swift Middle school and J.A. Williams high school were joined on the track by students from the Cold Lake and Bonnyville region. More than 300 students from 18 different schools competed in events like long jump, hurdles and shot put.
Students in Grades 10 and 11 who landed in the top two spots at the event last week will be heading to the provincial track and field competition. Several local students, like Ecole Beausejour students Joanie Ulliac for the triple jump category and Ashley Menard for 400-metre run and shot put events, are going to the provincial event next weekend.
“There weren’t that many records broken, but a lot of the students beat their personal bests,” said Darcy Plamondon, the main organizer of the event.
Two students from Ecole Plamondon and two students from J.A. Williams will also be heading to the provincial competition.
