Voyageurs lose at home, win on the road

The Voyageurs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Augustana Vikings at the Bold Centre on Feb. 14 and beat their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC0 North Division Rivals the following day during an away match in Camrose. The Voyageurs, who hold last spot in their seven-team ACAC North Division, will be playing their final games of the 2024-25 season on Feb. 21 and 22.

LAC LA BICHE – The Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team faced off against the Augustana Vikings on Feb. 14 and 15, losing at home, but winning on the road.

Although the Voyageurs dropped a 5-2 decision to their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division rivals at the Bold Centre on Feb. 14, the team rebounded in Camrose the following day, achieving a 6-4 win in the rematch.

The Voyageurs, who hold last spot in their seven-team ACAC North Division, play their final games of the 2024-25 season from Feb. 21-22, when they take on Red Deer Polytechnic.

During the Feb. 14 home game, the Voyageurs found themselves being kept off the scoreboard until the dying seconds of the first period, when forward Tye Evans, with help from teammates Austin Mumby and Payton McDonald-Corea, scored the team’s first goal of the evening.

The Vikings continued getting past Portage College’s defenses, going into the third period with a commanding 5-1 lead.

Close to the halfway mark of the final portion of the match, Voyageurs' forward Xavier Halterman, with assistance from Mason Beck and Payton McDonald-Corea, scored Portage College’s second and last goal.

The Voyageurs were on the road on Feb. 15 for a second round against the Vikings.

Ty Milgate and Mason Beck scored the opening goals for the Voyageurs in the first period of that game, while teammate Stavros Koutsantonis, unassisted, provided Portage College’s third goal.

Both ACAC squads were tied 3-3 going into the third period.

Seconds into the final portion of the game, Xavier Halterman, assisted by Isaak Watters, shot the puck past Augustana goalie Zach Willms to give the Voyageurs a 4-3 lead. Tye Evans and Carter Yarish scored the fifth and sixth goals of the game to give Portage College a 6-4 victory.

The Voyageurs will be hosting Red Deer Polytechnic at the Bold Centre on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and on Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
