Youth learn about healthy eating at 'pita party' in Lac La Biche

The activity was held at McArthur Place in Lac La Biche on March 28 and was put on through the Lac La Biche County FCSS Teen Skillzone program.

LAC LA BICHE – On March 28, a group of youth learned about nutrition while having fun during an afternoon ‘Pita Party’ put on through the Lac La Biche County Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Teen Skillzone program.

Sue LaPierre, a personal trainer, fitness instructor, and registered holistic nutrition practitioner based in the Lac La Biche area, led the 12 teens who participated in the event. They made pita bread from scratch. The session was held at McArthur Place.

“Sue taught the teens how to make pita bread from scratch – so that included everything from preparing the dough and letting it rise, to baking the pitas to teaching them about some healthy fillings they could use once the pitas were done baking,” said Christine Martin, a community outreach worker with Lac La Biche County FCSS.

As the participants waited for the dough to rise, they gathered to listen to a talk by LaPierre, focusing on healthy eating.

The event was a partnership program between FCSS and Lac La Biche County Recreation as part of local activities for Nutrition Month. Each year, March is designated as nutrition month across Canada.

Throughout the pita party, Martin said, the youth learned that there are not necessarily ‘bad foods,’ but foods that should be eaten frequently and others that are better to be limited by just eating them occasionally.

“I think they left feeling good about balancing different kinds of foods throughout the day,” she said.
