The Alberta government has extended a freeze on municipalities' ability to set-up photo radar, or Automated Traffic Enforcement, in new locations, or to purchase new equipment for another year.
The freeze has been in place since Dec. 1, 2019.
Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen announced today that not only is the freeze being extended, but the cities of Edmonton and Calgary will no longer be able to operate photo radar on ring roads such as Anthony Henday Drive.
As part of the one-year extension, the government will be consulting with municipalities on how all photo radar enforcement can be used for improving safety, rather than simply as a way to generate revenue, according to Nov. 23 government release.
“Albertans can be confident that going forward, photo radar will only be used to improve traffic safety,” the release states.
