Bear spray used in attempted vehicle theft in St. Paul

Police ask public to contact them if they noticed a loud black truck with two windows smashed out of it on Oct. 2.

ST. PAUL - RCMP are investigating an incident that involved an attempted vehicle theft where the owner of the vehicle was bear sprayed. 

Police attended the area of 51st St. and 52nd Ave., in St. Paul on Oct. 2 at about 3:30 a.m. The resident reported being woken up and hearing someone attempting to steal their vehicle.

"The owner went outside along with two family members and confronted the suspects," according to RCMP. During the altercation, one of the suspects deployed bear sprayed at the owner and family members.

The suspect vehicle involved was described as a loud black truck and had the two side passenger windows smashed out. The driver was described as a male wearing a red sweater.

"We asked the public not to confront persons involved in a criminal act and to contact police immediately," says Sgt. David Graham of the St. Paul RCMP. "The element of risk is unknown and it could potentially put you in a dangerous or life threatening situation."
