BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Wellness Coalition (BWC) is taking bold steps to enhance community health by outlining plans for two new projects – a low-cost bike rental program and a community connection space at Vezeau Beach.

While the community connection space was approved by council, councillors say they need more information on the bike rental program. Building on their commitment to physical activity and social well-being, the BWC was eager to collaborate with the MD to introduce a low-cost bicycle rental program to the area.

The proposal suggested purchasing four bikes from a local sporting goods store and setting rental fees at $2. The proposal would promote physical activity while also addressing financial barriers by keeping the costs low.

The BWC also plans to provide helmets, disinfectant for cleanliness, and decals for bike recognition.

Additionally, the BWC proposed a partnership with the MD to establish a community connection space at Vezeau Beach. The plan involves purchasing two picnic tables through the commemorative bench and picnic table program.

The BWC offered to provide a "Community Wellness Board" designed to showcase community events and information. The cost, including installation, is $3,000 plus GST.

The motion to approve the community space was moved by Coun. Ben Fadeyiw and council unanimously approved the motion, however, councillors agreed more information was needed regarding the bike rental program.

“I think it's a great opportunity for a private business to rent paddleboards, canoe, kayaks and bicycles,” said Coun. Darcey Skarsen.

Fadeyiw emphasized caution before moving forward with the idea. “Maintenance on these bikes is not cheap. Gearing alone, you’re looking at $300-$500 per bike. I think it’s a good testing program. Let’s see what they can do,” he said.
