Crash outside of Fort Kent sends seven people to hospital, one transported by STARS

A Sunday morning two-vehicle crash along Highway 28, east of Fort Kent, sends seven people to hospital. One person was airlifted to Edmonton by STARS Air Ambulance.

MD of Bonnyville peace officers are redirecting traffic to use Range Road 445 if they are travelling east from Bonnyville or Range Road 443 from Cold Lake side, to avoid a collision on Highway 28 near Fort Kent.

FORT KENT – Sunday morning at 11:20 a.m., emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 28 near Range Road 444. 

“A total of seven patients were transported to both Bonnyville Health Centre and Cold Lake Hospital via EMS crews from Bonnyville and Cold Lake,” wrote Regional Fire Chief Dan Heney in a statement to Lakeland Today.  

“One patient was transported via STARS helicopter to Edmonton.” 

In order to remove two occupants from one of the vehicles, heavy hydraulic tools commonly referred to as the Jaws of Life were used by firefighters who responded to the incident from Station 5 Bonnyville, Station 7 Fort Kent and Station 8 Ardmore, according to Heney. 

Also attending the scene was EMS crews from Bonnyville and Cold Lake, STARS Air Ambulance, MD of Bonnyville peace officers and Cold Lake RCMP who are investigating the incident.  

Highway 28 was closed in both directions for several hours
