Creep it safe this Halloween

Alberta RCMP are asking people to stay safe and following a few simple tips this Halloween.

LAKELAND - Students at École Notre Dame Elementary School in Bonnyville had a special presentation on Oct. 28 by Peace Officer Rachelle Rupp, in preparation for the upcoming weekend.

Rupp shared Halloween safety tips with students, such as to go trick-or-treating with an adult, bringing a flashlight along, walking on the sidewalk, and looking both ways before crossing the road. Children are also encouraged to wear reflective clothing when they head out on Sunday, and have an adult check their candy before eating it.

In addition to learning these tips, the students watched a brief video and were given an activity sheet to take home.

"We are grateful for any opportunity where we can teach our students safe practices. The health and safety of our students is always a top priority," said Meagan MacEachern, communications officer with Lakeland Catholic School Division (LCSD).

RCMP also reminding everyone to stay safe

Alberta RCMP and other emergency services are reminding motorists to keep safety in mind on Sunday as all the little ghosts, goblins and ghouls hit the street to trick or treat.

"The Alberta RCMP asks road users to be mindful of trick-or-treaters this Halloween and to keep an eye out for all the princesses, dragons, and cowboys taking to our streets and sidewalks," reads information released on Thursday, just days ahead of Halloween.

But, safety goes beyond those driving on the busy roads.

For those planning to participate in Halloween festivities this year, police have provided the following tips to ensure everyone has a "safe and fa-boo-lous time."

The following are tips released by Alberta RCMP

  • What's scarier than things that go bump in the night? Impaired driving. Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Schedule a taxi, ride share, designated driver, or flying broomstick to get home safely.
  • Motorists have ghost to be alert! Beware of pedestrians and increased foot traffic.
  • No need to be afraid of the dark. Carry a flashlight, wear a bright costume, or add reflective material to your spook-tacular get-up so that motorists can easily see you.
  • Going all out with your costume? Fang-tastic! Just ensure masks or hoods do not obstruct your vision and that you are able to see clearly.
  • Even monsters and fairy-tale creatures need to abide by the rules of the road. Be sure to use crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
  • It is always a ghoul idea for children to travel with parents, guardians, or in a trusted group.
  • It may sound candy-corny, but remember to have fun!
