Highway 63 crash claims life of Edmonton man

A 65 year old Edmonton man is dead after a single vehicle crash on an area highway early Thursday morning.

A 65 year old Edmonton man is dead after a single vehicle crash on an area highway early Thursday morning.

Athabasca RCMP are reporting the driver was the lone occupant of a pickup truck that crashed along Highway 63, just north of the Avenir connector at about 1 a.m Thursday morning. Police say their initial investigation shows the southbound truck swerved and rolled several times before coming to rest in the centre meridian of the twinned highway.

The Wandering River Fire Department, Highway 63 Rescue, Emergency Medical Services and RCMP were joined by other motorists who tried to extricate the driver from the wrecked vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP say icy road conditions at the time of the crash are a contributing factor to the crash.

Southbound traffic on the north-south highway was diverted while emergency crews were on the scene.

The name of the deceased will not be released.

The Avenir intersection on Highway 63 is about 30 kilometres northeast of Plamondon.
