Legion Remembrance contest winners chosen

Last Friday, several community volunteers took the time to act as judges for the Bonnyville Legion’s annual Remembrance Contest. Winning entries will move onto to the provincial level.

BONNYVILLE – On Nov. 19, community members arrived at the Bonnyville Legion Branch to pour over more than 100 student submissions for the Legion’s annual Remembrance Contest.

Volunteer judges spent the evening reading and reviewing essays, poems and posters submitted by local students in four categories.

Categories include Senior, which ranges from Grades 10-12, Intermediate that ranges from Grades 7-9, Junior includes Grades 4-6 and the Primary category encompasses Grades 1-3, however, that age bracket only competes in a poster contest.

Every year the Royal Canadian Legion, in partnership with schools across the country, promote remembrance and support youth education through the annual poster and literary contests.

“Winning entries move forward to the Legion’s provincial level contests,” according to the Legion’s national website. “Finalists are then forwarded to the Legion National Foundation in Ottawa to be judged at the national level.”

Both the poster and literary contest is divided into two sub categories, colour and black and white, and essay and poem.

Bonnyville’s student winners will walk away with more than just the prestige of taking the top place. First place winners in each category will receive $75, second place winners will receive $50 and those coming in third will be awarded $25.
