U7 jamboree teaches grassroots of hockey in St. Paul

A U7 hockey jamboree in St. Paul featured teams from across the Lakeland, including Bonnyville and Lac La Biche.

ST. PAUL – At the youngest levels of minor hockey, the focus isn't about scores or standings - it's about development.

Getting on-ice experience was the goal as U7 teams in the Lakeland gathered at the Clancy Richard Arena on Feb. 1 for a series of games to help build their skills and confidence in a structured, but low-pressure environment.

"At this age, it's all about them having fun, while coaches work with them to develop their skills," said Gisele Langevin-Fontaine, a coordinator of the jamboree. "These jamboree and tournaments let them practice what they've learned."

Brad Eamon, assistant coach of one of the U7 St. Paul teams, agreed with the sentiment, noting the biggest thing at the U7 level is teaching youth about sportsmanship. Learning while remaining respectful is "really just the grassroots of hockey," he said.

"It's great to see the kids out here hustling the way they are," said Eamon.
