Perogy supper raises more than $20,000 for Ukraine

Plates filled with perogies and cabbage rolls were served up on April 1, raising $20,000 for humanitarian efforts.

ST. PAUL - Hundreds of people enjoyed not only a great meal on April 1, but stepped up in a big way to help raise money for humanitarian efforts in Eastern Europe.

The All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Cultural Centre in St. Paul hosted a perogy supper, with dine-in and take-out options available. The meal was made possible thanks to a partnership between the All Saints church, and the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, the St. Paul Desna Ukrainian Dance Club, and countless other volunteers who gave their time to prepare for the supper, and serve the meal.

Work bees to make the perogies and cabbage rolls ahead of time drew in many helping hands, leading up to April 1.

Ukrainian pins and flags were also sold to support the cause.

The dinner raised more than $20,000 for relief efforts in Ukraine.

"The people of Ukraine are undergoing an unspeakable challenge in the face of war, and it is incredibly special and heartwarming to see the community, countless treasured volunteers, and the people of our community come together and share in fellowship and a traditional Ukrainian meal in support of relief efforts for the people of Ukraine," said Father Peter Haugen.

Funds raised will be donated to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, and a follow-up event is in the works, according to information from organizers. Those involved would like to thank the community, volunteers and all contributors for their support.
